Continuing Studies And The Working Actor
Instructor: Joe McCoy
Following Essential Techniques, the studio provides a series of courses for continuing studies. Under the heading of the Working Actor,
these courses are constructed to develop a confident approach to any challenge the actor may encounter. It is the beginning of forging
a reliable working process. Using contemporary scenes from film and TV, we will examine "What the scene is about" and establish the
acceptance of ‘core circumstance’. Various exercises are applied to free the actor from the page and experience the character’s truth.
Particular focus is brought to: How a scene is built moment to moment. Substitution and subtext. Actioning the text. How the actor prepares.
The interpretation of script and story, choice of objective, identification of obstacles and activating the text. (Participants may expect a
few hours homework between classes).
Testimonials:
"Joe McCoy is simply the most gifted and intuitive teacher I've come across in my career as an actor. He creates a place of trust, and guides you to a threshold you didn't know was there."
- Richard Johnson (Dark Angel,Dead Zone)
"He doesn't teach,he reveals. He has the ability to show you what you already have."
- Chris Clipperton (X men 3, national commercial)
"Joe is the best teacher I have had in my entire life.Since working with Joe I have gone on to work with some of Canada's most celebrated artists and have won numerous awards, and none of that would have been possible without Joe.He helps his students reach places in themselves they once thought impossible. And I am not alone in feeling this way, I can safely say that every former student I remain in contact with has had a transformational experience working with Joe. If you have a chance to work with him, do it, nothing could be more important."

The Auditioning Dilemma and Solutions
Instructor: Joanne Wilson
A great course for those who want to learn the basics of auditioning or for those who would like to brush up with a weekly auditioning workout. Auditioning is the dilemma all actors have to face – after all, auditioning is the one and only way for actors get cast in film and TV. Even top actors who are well-trained and in demand have had to come to terms with the unique and challenging process of auditioning. Without it, they would never have made it to the level they are at! So, what are you doing to ensure you are ready for your audition? The Auditioning Dilemma will take you through the auditioning process including how to quickly and efficiently break down sides. As well as script analysis and character breakdown, the course will help you understand what role your character plays in the overall story. As the course progresses, actors will be given the opportunity to present their auditions in an environment that mimics the real thing. This course will also cover auditioning etiquette, casting director follow up, headshots, what to wear, use of props, camera eye-lines, and how to keep yourself alive and in the moment (despite nerves). The goal is to learn techniques and to become comfortable with the process so that your auditions stand out.

Truth In Comedy
Instructor: Jeni Gunn
Comedy in film is actually not about “being funny”, but rather being truthful. Also, being able to play comedy makes dramatic work more effective. In this dynamic course, you’ll learn specific techniques around timing, tempo, status, playing the opposites, highest stakes, and why it’s vital to discover the humor/love in any script. From scene-work and script breakdown to spontaneity & improvisation, the students will explore a range of comedic styles and discover how comedy and conflict are related! You’ll learn (a) how to be active (b) responsive and (c) alive in scripted and unscripted situations. In the final classes we will be filming both scripted and improvised scenarios for playback and each student will receive a copy of this unedited final session as a dvd document of the group experience and their individual progress
Jeni Gunn is a stage/film actor, humor essayist and comedy writer. She’s a regular performer at Phillips Comedy Night, and has written material for troupes The Muddy Sundries, Eats Shoots and Leaves, 30 Cent Players and her own venture- This Is Only a Test. Jeni’s one woman shows have been excellently received in festivals around BC, and her first feature film co-written with Joe McCoy is slated to begin production in 2010. Jeni is currently on faculty at Kaleidoscope Theater, and teaches “Laughing In The Dark” workshops to non-profit organizations and at-risk teens.
